Hello
I have a '68 383 console 4spd coupe that I bought wrecked from a guy in
Berkeley, CA about ten years ago; someone ran it into a Bay Bridge abuttment. I cut the front end off of another Cuda and welded it on, but
then got married and had a kid, so it's just sitting unfinished in my
garage.
It had the wide steel wheels on it, but every one was bent, so
I've put Ralley's on it, which looks better anyway in my opinion.
According to one of Galen Govier's books, there were 155 383 4spd coupes
made in 1968, but I've never seen another one; they're all fastbacks.
Fortunately I haven't been forced to sell it yet. Now that I'm divorced,
I'm hoping I'll be able to finish it this summer. I'll try and scan some
of the pictures we took before the new front was welded on; it's not
much to look at, but it's mine...
Although I haven't checked the numbers, I believe it is the original
engine and transmission. The carb still has the tag, it still has the
unsilenced air cleaner, and apart from the fact that I've had a whole new
front end welded on, the rest appears original. It LOOKS like it was a low-milage car before it got smashed. It'll take me a while to find the
fender tag since I've moved a couple of times, but I'll try to remember
to get the vin. I also have a broadcast sheet for it somewhere. It also
still has the "383-S" hood inserts, and the Formula S medallions on the
sides.
It also has drum brakes, and I thought they were supposed to come with
front disks standard. Sure looks original, though.
I guess most of them suffered the same fate as mine, but they didn't find
some dingdong with more money than brains to rescue them. And like I say,
the only pictures I have are with the motor out when I was taking it to
the shop to be Frankensteined, but I'll try to get them to you.
Here are the pics and the scan of the fender tag rubbing in jpeg.It occurred to me after
I went to all that trouble I could have just scanned the fender tag, but
it probably wouldn't have been as legible. You can see in the frame rail
pic that the frame rail, which of course is supposed to be straight, was
pretty badly bent; what's harder to see in this picture is that it's also
folded back on itself. I probably should have taken a pic of the engine,
too. I thought I had some better pictures, but couldn't find them; I
don't think these really are good enough for inclusion on your site, but
if you want to put them up it's fine by me. The vin is BH23H8B229311.
One thing I thought was kind of funny--the service tag on the door puts
the mileage at 60,194; the odometer reads 60,195. So apparently the guy
who wrecked it did so within one mile of getting it serviced. I guess he
was checking to see if it was in good tune.
I have seen one 383 fastback locally, although that was a few years ago.
I think it was an automatic.
