HISTORY
I have wanted a Barracuda Fastback for a LONG time. But kids came along, bills, responsibilities, no money for extras...you know the story....So, 15+ years later, cudawantd is my screen name with AOL (what the heck, its free advertising) and I am instant messaged by the original owner of a 1968 Barracuda Fastback....would I be interested in it?? YES YES (thinking... it's probably in California) but lo' and behold the car is here in MARYLAND, .. so we went to look at it---and, oh my god---hiding in the garage is my dream car, the prescription for my addiction, the object of my affection. How much ???....more than I had....please don't sell it, can you wait till I can scrape the money together??
Then on March 15, 1998 6 months after setting my eyes on her for the first time, the 5 of us piled into the family F*rd van, followed by our neighbor and his family who was pulling their car trailer, and the rest is history!

So here's the rundown of my dream fish:

  1. It is a "numbers matching car"so far....I found the entire VIN# stamped on the transmission---But I'm having problems finding it on the engine. I have found the 383 stamped on it and the correct casting numbers--But, the VIN# isn't where it is "suppossed" to be (passengers side, above lip of oil pan). I'm not done scraping the 30 years of dirt and grime off yet, and another source has placed the location as being on the drivers side upper rear of the block (not checked there yet). It is a 1968 V8 "B" big block...anybody out there know the EXACT location????

  2. She had 108,135 miles on the FormulaS "optional" Super Commando 383 engine. Other included options are: chrome cylinder head covers, crankcase vent cap and oil filler cap. Heavy duty shocks, rear leaf springs and torsion bars. Sway eliminator bar in the front, Sure-Grip differential, dual exhaust, a 59 amp battery, undercoating and a hood insulator pad.

  3. Optional 4-on-the-floor with factory-YES-factory Hurst shifter. Thank god for the cute little reverse light on the dash--otherwise I don't know if I got it in reverse or still in first (the guy who designed the Barracuda must of had a wife who said "George, if you don't put a little light on the dash so I know when I'm in reverse-I won't drive it")

  4. Optional deluxe interior--wood grained trim, carpeted seat backs, map pouches on the doors, rear ash trays, bright metal trim on brake, clutch and gas pedals. She also has the optional tinted glass on all windows.

  5. Optional light accessory group--turn signals on the hood, ignition delay light, map light, and YES a trunk light. She also has the optional remote outside left mirror and optional front shoulder belts.

  6. Optional am radio. (do they still have stations on the AM dial??)

  7. Optional rear window defogger.

  8. Optional Rallye instrument cluster: Wood grained trim on instrument panel, 150mph speedometer ("The world may never know....") and a trip odometer.

  9. Optional tachometer. (personally, I'd rather have had the clock!!!)

  10. Optional simulated wood grained sport steering wheel. And, YES it has a 1/4 inch crack in it...Does yours too??? (ouch, I got a splinter!)

  11. She does NOT have power steering, air conditioning, disc or power brakes.

  12. She is missing the optional sport stripes (it was repainted once), body belt moldings---she might have those, what are they??, a few of the emblems are missing and so are the optional dealer installed wheel covers (of course the tires and rims are not the originals-but the red line spare that is still in the trunk is!).

Also, I got the original (not a reprint) 1968 Plymouth factory service manual, the 1968 Barracuda operating instruction manual (owners manual) with Certicard (see images/cudas), 2 build sheets, the original book of the new 1968 Plymouth cars (that big shiny book you get at the dealers showroom to take home and drool over) and I just got the ORIGINAL sales ticket from the original owner from when he bought her on April 12, 1968 for $3,483.50 (see images/cudas!).

......Oooooooohhhhh, Barracuda.......

Here's a picture of my first car! I even had one of those corny "musical horns" that played 200 songs.
