Subject:68 Barracuda wins at local car show! I think?
Date sent:Tue, 13 Jul 1999

After purchasing my 68 fastback 318 powered Barracuda last January, I thought it would be nice to go to some of the many weekly car shows here in Southern California to do some "networking" for parts and services....Sort of "lining-up-my-ducks" kind of thing.

I received a flyer from a friend for a weekly car show at the local Omega Burger in Downtown City of Orange. I had no plans that day, so I drove my yellow fish down there to catch the action. I was the 18th car to arrive and backed into an empty space near the judges stand, popped the hood to show my greasy engine, and then walked over to grab a burger.

When I got back the 75th car had arrived and the place was full of just about everything from the usual Fords and Chevys to the rare 35 Auburn, Porsche Spyder, and 49 Anglia dragster. The only other Mopar was an emaculate looking 73 Roadrunner pro-street. Remembering that my car is unrestored, I found myself very much out-of-place with these other cars.

Then I noticed the two cars that parked next to mine. On the left was a perfectly restored 55 Bel Air, and to my right, a just-as-perfect looking 28 Model A pickup (this does not look good next to any unrestored vehicle--See new picture). But, I did get to talk to some of the folks and collected some business cards from get-rich-quick restoration shops.

The lady who was running the show draws all the raffle prizes, then announces the trophy winners. The usual Best Daily Driver, Best Paint, Best Vintage and Best Custom. Just before the final Best Show, she announces the 'Best Almost Done' trophy for best looking car undergoing restoration (I didn't know they had a prize for this). The winner was (I kid you not, this is how she announced it), THE YELLOW 68 BARRETTA!

There was dead silence form the crowd as everyone was giving her a blank stare, including me. Then she noticed nobody was reacting so she pointed at my car! Well, as you might have guessed, getting the wrong name for a car at a car show is like the unpardonable sin in the Bible.

Every car owner yelled at the lady correcting her for the BIG mistake. I couldn't believe it! Ford and Chevy Gurus were supporting me in this embarrassing situation. This was good. I graciously received my small trophy, and drove my award winning Barracuda to the store to develop the pictures and went home.

As I looked at the pictures, I realized the only other unrestored car there was a rusted out pink over white Edsel. No competition there, no wonder I won!! And the Best of show went to the 73 Roadrunner pro-street. All attending Mopars won. It doesn't get any better than that.

Hope you enjoyed my story
